Tulane University was founded in 1834 with the creation of a school of medecine. It now has ten colleges/schhols such as the business school, law school, etc. Paul Tulane and Joséphone Louise Newcomb turned it into a private university in 1884 making it the only public university to be privatized. Over 14 000 students are enrolled. 

Paul Tulane (1801-1887) was an American philanthropist and donor, born into a wealthy family of French merchants in the New Jersey.
